Buy a new automobile in NJ - live in PA: How?
Thinking of ownership a new car from a dealer in NJ just we live in PA.
How does this work from a registration, title, tax, etc. perspective?
Is it easier to just purchase from a PA dealer?
Never did this earlier but I am getting a good price in NJ.
Thanks in advance.

I've bought cars from out of state earlier. They give yous a temporary interstate tag. You lot also get a signed championship and a neb of sale. Out of state title proves the car was bought out of state, and y'all don't need the seller at the notary with yous. You bring the motorcar abode, go to the title and tags place of your choosing, and they sort it out for you.

Thanks for the quick replies.
So, if the dealer is Non set-upwards to issue PA tags/etc., I pay sales tax in PA at time of registration correct? I.eastward. subsequently I get information technology abode from NJ using the temporary interstate tag.
I exercise not give the dealer any $$$ for taxation at time of purchase. Correct?

Re: Purchase a new car in NJ - live in PA: How?
If information technology is a registered dealer, I retrieve they will collect NJ sales tax. When it is registered in PA yous pay the PA sales tax on the full less the tax paid to NJ.
IIRC nigh of NJ is six% and most of PA is 6% so it is a wash. If y'all buy in one of the NJ special low sales tax zones and you paid the three%-iv% to NJ, you pay 3%-two% respectively to PA too.

They won't collect taxation at the dealer. You pay the tax when you register the car. If you tin annals it for PA in NJ, I am guessing they would take to collect sales revenue enhancement for PA. If you annals information technology once you get back to PA, the nib of sale would have the value yous paid for the car on it. You pay taxes for it based on that.

Here is a novel thought: since you've apparently already been to this dealer, why non just call them and inquire them what you need to do? Granted most of the advice hither is right on, but why not simply get to the dealer?

I bought a new car in NY equally a resident of PA. They handled taxation and tags and PA registration. You pay the tax based on where the automobile is registered. Best bet, call the dealer

I bought my Harley in Delaware, the home of tax free shopping.
The DE dealer charged me PA sales revenue enhancement and did all the PA paperwork, including transferring my PA tag from my merchandise in to the new cycle. When I got my registration in the mail there was an fastened note stating the tax the dealer reported collecting and if information technology didn't match to contact PENNDOT.
Can't imagine information technology would be much different ownership in NJ, Merely as chrisjames_71 suggested, inquire the dealer what they do in your situation.
